Cooking from Scratch by PCC Community Markets is focused on cooking with seasonal ingredients. The dishes are simple, and I marked several to try. One of the ones I look forward to making is the Finnish Buttermilk Cake since I often have buttermilk that needs to be used up. Many of the recipes include ingredients that I could never talk my family into trying. An adventurous vegetable eater would make this cookbook more useful. If you love all types of vegetables and are interested in finding new recipes, this cookbook has great potential.
Dorothy St. James' third book in the Southern Chocolate Shop Mystery series is In Cold Chocolate. Charity Penn has settled into life on the coast of South Carolina as owner of The Chocolate Box. She joins a turtle watch team in hopes of seeing some baby sea turtles hatch. One of the volunteers seems to take things a bit too far when she is found holding two guns over the body of a local homeowner. Penn finds herself in the middle of another mystery all while dealing with legal issues over the chocolate shop. It is not necessary to have read the first two books, but it does help as one plot line is ongoing.
If the Coffin Fits by Lillian Bell is the second book in the Funeral Parlor Mystery series. Desiree works at her family's funeral home and should be used to people dying. Instead she is finding every death suspicious, and it is starting to cause problems for her family's business. She also discovers that some people have no problem speaking ill of the dead. That is the case of Violet who died in a car accident, and the source of Desiree's latest investigation. Despite the funeral parlor theme, this is not a morbid series. Desiree and her family as well as the other characters are charming. This book easily stands on it own and is a strong second installment. I look forward to many more in the series.
