Tomato Growing Tips

Homegrown tomatoes are beyond delicious and truly embody the taste of summer.  I like to grow specific types, and those varieties of plants are not available for purchase where I live.  This means that I start my tomatoes from seed.

Once the tomato seeds sprout and get their second set of leaves, they are ready to be transplanted.  One issue is that tomatoes are often “leggy” meaning they have long, thin stems.

These tomato stems also have lots of tiny “hairs” which are actually the beginnings of additional roots.  To take advantage of these extra roots and to strengthen your tomato plants, you should always plant them as deep as possible anytime you move them.  That means the seedling above now looks like this when transplanted.

This plant could even have been planted a bit deeper.  I like to plant them as close to the top set of leaves as possible.  This may mean that you need remove some leaves from lower on the stems and that you may need to lay the stems flat or even curl them around.  Do what you need to get them as deep as you can in the dir.  This gives you a stronger root system and a stronger plant.

A final tip for strengthening your indoor seedlings/plants is to mimic the wind by gently brushing your hand across the top part of the plants.  This action signals to the plant that it needs to grow a stronger stem to withstand the “winds”.  I try to do this daily once the plants have their true leaves.

Weekly Savings

I am trying to write stuff down throughout the week otherwise I cannot remember what all I have done.

We were not able to attend our youngest niece's birthday party.  I had purchased an item, but the cost of shipping was going to be almost as much as the gift.  Instead I put the purchased gift aside for Christmas.  I ordered a gift to be shipped free directly to the birthday girl through Amazon Prime.  The cost of the gift was about the same as the cost of shipping the first gift.  I also used gift cards earned through Swagbucks to pay for the gift.

W has been saving his citrus peels and I am making some orange vinegar for cleaning.  I used a glass jar I already had, and I always keep white vinegar on hand.

I baked bread and made pizza dough from scratch.  I made salad dressings and baked cookies for W's lunch.  I stretched some leftover chicken tenders by making big salads topped with the sliced chicken tenders and hard boiled egg slices.  We also ate leftovers a couple of times.

Made a gift for a young cousin's birthday using items that I had on hand.

I purchased DVDs for us taking advantage of sales.  I purchased some used.  Others I was able to purchase new sets for less than the cost of a used copy.  These can be resold after we watch them.  Some evenings our Internet service does not work which means we cannot watch TV.  W has to have the TV on so this gives us something to watch.

I discovered that I really love listening to college basketball games.  I can purchase a year long audio subscription to Duke sports for just $30.  Sports is often the main reason people give for not being able to cancel a cable/satellite subscription.  I decided it was just not worth $1,080 for me to watch basketball games.  I save $1,050 by choosing an audio subscription through the college team I love.  The college's announcers are much more pleasant to listen to than the national announcers.   This $30 subscription gives me access to the team radio shows and post-game interviews.

I made the Swagbucks goal each day for the month of February which earned me $40 in Amazon gift cards.  These will go toward the purchase of gifts.

March Goals

How did February go?  Well, I did lighten up on the frivolous purchases.  I did not go crazy, but I definitely spent more money extras in February.  Some of the Life Happens accounts are almost fully funded so I will continue to work on that which will be ongoing until they are all maxed out.

I did not do as well on eating fruit.  I started off well but slipped.  I am brushing myself off and focusing on this again in March.  I will be tracking this daily with the USDA Food Tracker

I made a big dent in my bookshelves last month.  I had been saving back issues of many gardening/country living magazines.  Those are the next things that will be going.  I am tearing out any articles I want to save and getting the magazines out of the house.  This will free up some space in my craft room to better organize my supplies.

The garden is off to a good start.  This month I want to continue to work on the garden and also work on getting the yard in shape.  I need a plan for what to plant where in the raised beds.  I hope to get the front porch and back deck spruced up.  The chickens have done most of the weeding for me this year.  Having them outside means that planting flower seeds is pointless.  I will be watching the clearance racks at the garden center for deals on plants.

My March goals then are:
1.  Eat more fruit
2.  Declutter magazines
3.  Work in the yard and garden
