Weekend Book Reviews

Playing with Bonbon Fire by Dorothy St. James is the second book in the Southern Chocolate Shop Mystery series.  Penn is settling into life at Camellia Beach and in her new chocolate shop.  Penn is helping with the beach music festival and keeping up with headliner Bixby Lewis.  When it appears that someone is trying to murder Bixby, Penn steps in to protect him and her shop.  The setting of this series makes me want to run off to the beach.  I have read the previous book, but it is not necessary to enjoy this one.  I enjoy how the characters are developing and look forward to the next book!

Debra Sennefelder's The Uninvited Corpse is the first book in the Food Blogger Mystery series.  Hope was once a magazine editor and then on a reality baking show.  Now she is a food blogger struggling to leave her past behind.  She attends a garden party where the uninvited corpse shows up in the form of a very much disliked realtor named Peaches.  The beginning of the book is a bit hard to follow since so many characters are introduced at once.  Each character falls into place, and I was able to focus on the mystery.  I did guess the killer but only near the end.  The mystery was strong, and Hope is a lovely cozy mystery heroine.  This was a strong start to a new series.

disclosure:  I received these e-books through NetGalley but was not otherwise compensated for these reviews.  All opinions are my own!
